A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE CONSOLIDATION
AND MERGER OF PARKVIEW EPISCOPAL MEDICAL
CENTER AND ST. MARY- CORWIN REGIONAL
MEDICAL CENTER
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Pueblo is aware
that Parkview Episcopal Medical Center and St. Mary - Corwin Regional
Medical Center plan to consolidate and merge;
WHEREAS, Pueblo has experienced difficult economic
circumstances as a result of the loss of employment opportunities
for its residents and is in the process of recovery;
WHEREAS, despite the recovery that has occurred, a large
percentage of the households in Pueblo are at or below the poverty
level;
WHEREAS, a consolidation study has been conducted, indicating
that the merger will reduce costs for the combined hospitals by
over $50 million over five years;
WHEREAS, the merger is likely to reduce the cost of health
care for residents of the City of Pueblo;
WHEREAS, the Pueblo Community cannot afford to continue to
subsidize inefficiencies resulting from the operation of two separate
hospitals in a community of its size;
WHEREAS, the merger should increase the quality of medical
care for residents of the City of Pueblo by enabling the merged
hospitals to take advantage of their respective strengths and direct
more attention to the quality of patient care;
WHEREAS, the merger should result in increased focus on
preventative medicine and increased access for residents of Pueblo,
which are needed in this community;
WHEREAS, low cost, high quality medical care is important
to the retention of employers in Pueblo and the ability of Pueblo
to attract new employers;
WHEREAS, the merger should provide low cost, quality health
care that meets the particular needs of the Pueblo community, and
is vital to the future of Pueblo; NOW THEREFORE
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PUEBLO, that:
SECTION 1.
The City Council of Pueblo, Colorado supports the proposed
consolidation and merger of Parkview Episcopal Medical Center and
St. Mary- Corwin Regional Medical Center and hereby determines that
such consolidation and merger should be in the best interests of
the City of Pueblo and its residents.
