HomeMy WebLinkAbout16344 City Clerk's Office Item # Q3 Background Paper for Proposed Resolution COUNCIL MEETING DATE: June 8, 2026 TO: President Mark Aliff and Members of City Council CC: Mayor Heather Graham VIA: Clyde Bishop, City Clerk FROM: Joe Latino, Councilor SUBJECT: A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING PAYMENT FROM THE COUNCIL CONTINGENCIES ACCOUNT IN THE 2026 GENERAL FUND BUDGET TO NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LETTER CARRIERS IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,500 TO SPONSOR THE 6TH ANNUAL NALC GOLF TOURNAMENT AT 8:00 AM AT ELMWOOD GOLF COURSE ON SUNDAY, JUNE 28, 2026 SUMMARY: Attached for consideration is a request for support of National Association of Letter Carriers in the amount of $1,500 to sponsor the 6th Annual NALC Golf Tournament at 8:00 am at Elmwood Golf Course on Sunday, June 28, 2026. PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION: Council supported this event in 2025 for $1,000. BACKGROUND: City Council Member Joe Latino is requesting $1,500 to sponsor National Association of Letter Carriers 6th Annual NALC Golf Tournament. The event will take place on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at 8:00 AM at Elmwood Golf Course. The National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 229 is a 501(c)(5) Nonprofit. In addition to being the sole representative of city letter carriers employed by the U.S. Postal Service, the National Association of Letter Carriers contributes to countless -day food drive and have collected more than 1.9 billion pounds of food. In 1952, the National Association of Letter Carriers became the first national sponsor of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and remains a top fundraiser for the organization. local non-profits. Golfers will compete for various prizes, participate in a silent auction and 50/50 raffle. The participation fee covers a golf cart, gift, breakfast, coffee and lunch. The committee which organizes this event every year is made up of all volunteers. This year the NALC Local 229 is raising funds to support the Pueblo Bikers The Toy Bowl is a spirited and friendly flag football match between Pueblo Bikers United and Pueblo Law Enforcement (Pueblo PD, Sheriff's Office, and Department of Corrections) to collect toy donations for the Toy Run in December. This year the match will be held at the CSU Pueblo Thunderbowl in October. The Pueblo Bikers United Toy Run, which is often cited as the oldest Toy Run in America, is held annually on the first Saturday of December. Every year over a thousand bikers ride together with toys strapped to their bikes, parading through the city to transport toys for local children in need. The fee to ride is typically just $1 per rider, plus a new, unwrapped toy. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: Payment of funds in the amount of $1,500 would be paid from the Council Contingencies Account in the 2026 General Fund Budget to National Association of Letter Carriers. BOARD/COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION: Not applicable. STAKEHOLDER PROCESS: Not applicable. ALTERNATIVES: City Council could choose not to authorize funding for this purpose. Payment in the amount of $1,500 from the Council Contingencies Account in the 2026 General Fund Budget is authorized to be paid to National Association of Letter Carriers to sponsor the 6th Annual NALC Golf Tournament at 8:00 am at Elmwood Golf Course on Sunday, June 28, 2026. SECTION 2. The officers and staff of the City are authorized to perform any and all acts consistent with the intent of this Resolution to effectuate the policies and procedures described herein. SECTION 3. This Resolution shall become effective upon passage and approval.
