HomeMy WebLinkAbout16299 City Clerk's Office Item # M9 Background Paper for Proposed Resolution COUNCIL MEETING DATE: April 13, 2026 TO: President Mark Aliff and Members of City Council CC: Mayor Heather Graham VIA: Clyde Bishop, City Clerk FROM: Heather Graham, Mayor SUBJECT: A RESOLUTION REAPPOINTING NELSON DUNFORD AS THE PRESIDING JUDGE OF THE MUNICIPAL COURT SUMMARY: This resolution reappointed Nelson Dunford as Presiding Judge of the Municipal Court. PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION: With Resolution Number 15634, City Council confirmed Mr. Dunford's appointment to the position of Municipal Court Judge on May 13, 2024. BACKGROUND: Per Title 1, Chapter 6, of the City of Pueblo Charter, "The Mayor shall appoint subject to Council confirmation as many Municipal Judges as may be required to conduct the affairs of the Municipal Court. All Municipal Judges shall be attorneys admitted to practice law in the State. Each Municipal Judge shall be appointed for a term of two (2) years and may be removed by the Mayor for cause." This Resolution would reappoint Nelson Dunford as Presiding Municipal Court Judge for a term of two years effective May 1, 2026 and expiring on April 30, 2028. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: The Presiding Judge of the Municipal Court shall receive a salary, and related benefits as shall be fixed by the Mayor. BOARD/COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION: N/A STAKEHOLDER PROCESS: N/A ALTERNATIVES: If the City Council does not approve the reappointment of Nelson Dunford as the Presiding Judge, it will need to determine how it wishes to proceed to make a permanent appointment for this position. RECOMMENDATION: Approval of the Resolution. ATTACHMENTS: None RESOLUTION NO. 16299 A RESOLUTION REAPPOINTING NELSON DUNFORD AS THE PRESIDING JUDGE OF THE MUNICIPAL COURT BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PUEBLO, that SECTION 1. Nelson Dunford is hereby reappointed as the Presiding Municipal Court Judge of the Municipal Court for the City of Pueblo for a term of two years commencing May 1, 2026, and expiring on April 30, 2028. He shall act as the Municipal Court Administrator and shall supervise all Municipal Court personnel. He shall receive compensation in the amount of $12,350.60 per month. SECTION 2. The officers and staff of the City are authorized to perform any and all acts consistent with this Resolution to implement the appointments described herein. SECTION 3. This Resolution shall become effective on the date of final action by the Mayor and City Council.
