BACKGROUND: City Council Member Roger Gomez is requesting $2,500 to sponsor Lake Avenue -5 basketball camp Bessemer Buckets from June 9th - 11th, 2025, at Corwin Middle School and Nettie S. Freed Expeditionary, and their first K-8 soccer camp Bessemer Kicks June 30th - July 9th, 2025, at Minnequa Elementary. Lake Avenue Community Church is a new church started in the Bessemer neighborhood with a desire to serve and meet tangible needs in the community. Bessemer Buckets began its first year in 2023 with 80 children participating. In 2024, participation increased to 150 and this year they anticipate 190. For the first ever Bessemer Kicks program, they are expecting 50-80 total participants. Each of these programs is designed to give children a fun and safe atmosphere to get out of the house and play sports. Unlike high-dollar elite sports camps, these programs are intentionally inclusive to everyone and are fun events, but they also help offset financial burdens for parents struggling with childcare. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: Payment of funds in the amount of $2,500 would be paid from the Council Contingencies Account in the 2025 General Fund Budget to Lake Avenue Community Church. BOARD/COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION: N/A STAKEHOLDER PROCESS: N/A ALTERNATIVES: City Council could choose not to authorize funding for this purpose. RECOMMENDATION: This Resolution is at the request of Council Member Roger Gomez. ATTACHMENTS: 1. Sponsorship Request - Lake Avenue Community Church 2.
