PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION:

BACKGROUND:
City Council Member Regina Maestri is requesting $3,500 to sponsor HardKnox Gang
Prevention & Intervention.
HardKnox was founded in 2015 by Mark Salazar, a former gang member, with the goal
of helping kids from his community make different choices than he did. The program
promotes positive change by reducing violence, raising awareness, and building self-
efficacy in program participants.
HardKnox provides therapeutic mentoring and group sessions to high-risk kids in the
community and with adult parolees. The curriculum is evidence-based and addresses
the long-standing cultural and social norms involved with gangs. The program targets
gang prevention and intervention with the goal of reducing gang violence. The program
emphasizes educational achievement, positive life skills training, building intrinsic
motivation, personal health and well-being, and identifying treatment and counseling
needs.
Funds will be used to purchase chess boards, print workbooks for children in the
program, and purchase promotional items for the organization, such as backpacks,
wristbands, hats and shirts for program participants and for use at local events to
promote the program.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
Payment of funds in the amount of $3,500 would be paid from the Council Contingencies
