Resolution
COUNCIL MEETING DATE: November 25, 2024
TO: President Mark Aliff and Members of City Council
CC: Mayor Heather Graham
VIA: Marisa Stoller, City Clerk
FROM: Sarah Martinez, Councilor
SUBJECT: A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING PAYMENT FROM THE COUNCIL
CONTINGENCIES ACCOUNT IN THE 2024 GENERAL FUND BUDGET
TO PUEBLO DISTRICT 60 FOUNDATION IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,500
TO SPONSOR THE CHRISTMAS EXTRAVAGANZA IN SUPPORT OF
MINNEQUA & COLUMBIAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS ON FRIDAY,
DECEMBER 20, 2024
SUMMARY:
Attached for consideration is a request for support of Pueblo District 60 Foundation in
the amount of $1,500 to sponsor the Christmas Extravaganza in support of Minnequa &
Columbian Elementary Schools on Friday, December 20, 2024.
PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION:
Council supported this event for $500 in 2019 and $600 in 2018. City Council provided
sponsorship for this program in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017 which was called the
Bessemer Christmas Stocking Giveaway.
BACKGROUND:
City Council Member Sarah Martinez is requesting $1,500 to support the children in
Bessemer this Christmas via the Christmas Extravaganza. On December 20, the
Christmas Extravaganza will bring joy and happiness to children and their families from
Minnequa & Columbian Elementary Schools. The all-volunteer event will provide food,
Christmas Extravaganza had more than 1,200 children and 1,200 parents in
attendance. We gave away approximately 33,750 pounds of groceries with the
partnership of the Pueblo Food Project and the Care and Share Food Program. We
also gave away nearly 50 scooters to high-performing children who earn points from
learning new vocabulary words. We distributed 600 stuffed stockings and over 2,000
age-appropriate books were distributed, as well as educational toys.
For many years, founder and former City Councilor Ray Aguilera delighted in dressing
up as Santa Claus. He loved interacting with the kids, praising them for
accomplishments, encouraging them and asking them what they wanted for Christmas.
He shared that many of these children did not ask for toys and games for themselves,
rather, they asked for gifts for their parents or siblings. One year, a little girl told Santa
all she wanted for Christmas was for her mom to stop crying. Last year, a little boy
brothers some toys and a bicycle. Many children in these schools have worries other
children do not have, and by providing this event, we feel we are able to bring them
some joy and help them with their concerns.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
Payment of funds in the amount of $1,500 would be paid from the Council
Contingencies Account in the 2024 General Fund Budget to Pueblo District 60
Foundation.
