TITLE
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE FISCAL YEAR 2008 STAFFING ORDINANCE #7697
TO INCREASE BY 12 THE NUMBER OF AUTHORIZED POLICE PATROL OFFICERS
FROM 103 TO 115
ISSUE
The Staffing Ordinance must be amended to reflect the increase in the number of authorized
police patrol officers.
This ordinance placed on the agenda at the request of several Council members.
BACKGROUND
Staffing needs of the Police Department are such that we need additional Police Patrol
Officers.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The existing Civil Service list for Police Patrol Officers is nearly exhausted, so a new
recruitment will have to be conducted immediately instead of waiting until the end of the year
when the current list expires. Given the delay in developing a new hiring list, coupled with
the background investigations and other evaluations that comprise the hiring process, the
anticipated start date of the training academy is January of 2009. Therefore, there will be no
employment cost impact in 2008. The increase in staffing is projected to cost $702,433 in
2009. The cost impact in the following years, based on current salary and benefits, is
projected as follows:
2010 $833,835
2011 $875,538
2012 $939,095
2013 $964,255
2018 $1,030,418
