HomeMy WebLinkAbout07587ORDINANCE NO. 7587 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 6 -1 -7 OF THE PUEBLO MUNICIPAL CODE RELATING TO EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY BY PROVIDING THAT NO APPLICANT, CANDIDATE OR EMPLOYEE SHALL BE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST OR DENIED EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY IN THE SERVICE OF THE CITY ON THE BASIS OF SEXUAL ORIENTATION BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PUEBLO, that: SECTION 1 _ The City Council does hereby express its legislative intent and purpose as follows: (a) It is the intent of the City Council that every individual shall have an equal opportunity to participate in employment in the service of the City based upon such individual's merit, fitness and qualifications. (b) It is the intent of the City Council that no applicant, candidate or employee shall be discriminated against or denied equal employment opportunity in the service of the City on the basis of sexual orientation. (c) It is not the intent of the City Council to grant special rights or privileges on the basis of sexual orientation. SECTION 2. Section 6 -1 -7 of the Pueblo Municipal Code is amended to read as follows: Sec. 6 -1 -7. Equal employment opportunity. No applicant, candidate or employee shall be discriminated against or denied equal employment opportunity in the service of the City on the basis of race, color, religion, political affiliation, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, ancestry, age or handicap, except with regard to an otherwise qualified handicapped person, if the handicap actually disqualifies the person from the job, the handicap has a significant impact on the job, and there is no reasonable accommodation that the City can make with regard to the handicap, and except as otherwise may be provided by law. SECTION 3_ This Ordinance shall become effective upon final passage and approval. They are requesting that the classification of sexual orientation be added to this section, which includes the prohibition of discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, political affiliation, sex, national origin, ancestry, age, or handicap status. It is the intent of this Ordinance amendment that no applicant, candidate, or employee shall be discriminated against or denied equal employment opportunity in the service of the City on the basis of sexual orientation. Furthermore, it is not the intent of this Ordinance amendment to grant special rights or privileges on the basis of sexual orientation, as well. Approval of the Ordinance.
