TITLE
AN ORDINANCE DESIGNATING FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 310 WEST
11 STREET, AS A PUEBLO HISTORIC LANDMARK
ISSUE
Shall City Council designate First United Methodist Church as a local Pueblo Historic
Landmark, pursuant to the Historic Preservation Code, Title IV, Chapter 14 of the
Pueblo Municipal Code.
RECOMMENDATION
Adoption of Ordinance, as recommended by the Planning and Zoning Commission at
their meeting February 22, 2007 and the Historic Preservation Commission at their
regular meeting September 28, 2006.
BACKGROUND
First United Methodist Church qualifies for landmark designation under criterion 1A,
direct association with the historical development of the city, serving as home of one of
the oldest religious organizations in Pueblo and as the center for countless community
events of both religious and secular nature since 1923. The church is also significant
under criterion 2A, embodying distinguishing characteristics of an architectural style or
type, as an example of architect William Stickney's interpretation of Gothic and Tudor
Revival architectural styles, symbolizing the importance of the Methodist church's ties to
England.
Findings of staff, the Historic Preservation Commission, and the Planning and Zoning
Commission are attached.
