TITLE
AN ORDINANCE DESIGNATING THE BESSEMER FIRE STATION, 1201 EAST
EVANS, AS A LOCAL HISTORIC LANDMARK
ISSUE
Shall City Council designate The Bessemer Fire Station as a local Pueblo Historic
Landmark, pursuant to the Historic Preservation Code, Title IV, Chapter 14 of the
Pueblo Municipal Code.
Adoption of Ordinance
As is detailed in the Historic Preservation Commission's recommendation, the
Bessemer Fire Station was found to have "significant character, interest and value, as
part of the development, heritage, and cultural characteristics of the City" (Sec. 4-14 -
8(a)(1a)). It is further found to "portray the environment in an era of history
characterized by a distinctive architectural style" (Sec. 4- 14- 8(a)(2a)).
The Bessemer Fire Station is a classic example of construction by the Works Progress
Administration, providing work for U.S. citizens across the nation during the Great
Depression. It depicts the partnership between the WPA and the City, as a city staff
person designed it, with construction supervision by another staff member. The bricks
used in construction were salvaged from the Bessemer City Hall, demolished on an
adjacent lot.
This is the finest example of a commercial Pueblo Revival Style structure in the City of
Pueblo. The Pueblo Revival style gained its popularity in the early 1900's and
continued until World War II. It was originally developed through the CF &I Colorado
Supply Company stores, thus enhancing the importance of protecting Pueblo's
remaining exemplary structures.
Findings of staff, the Historic Preservation Commission, and the Planning and Zoning
Commission are attached.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The Historic Preservation Ordinance requires property owners to maintain Landmark
structures in accordance with the Pueblo Building Code (PMC Title IV and Chapter 1 of
Title VIII). The City would be required to provide maintenance for the Bessemer Fire
Station sufficient to meet the building code.
