BILLINGS, JR. TITLE AN ORDINANCE ACCEPTING A FEDERAL AWARD FOR THE PURCHASE OF BULLETPROOF VESTS, REPEALING ORDINANCE NO. 7283, AND APPROPRIATING FUNDS IN THE AMOUNT OF $67,207 FOR THIS PURPOSE ISSUE Allowing funds from the Seized Property Account and the federal Bulletproof Vest Partners Program to purchase body armor for police officers. RECOMMENDATION The department recommends approval of this ordinance. BACKGROUND The current body armor available to police officers is old and no longer meets NIJ (National Institute of Justice) safety standards. Not all officers have a vest available for their use. These funds will fund the purchase of approximately 190 vests for current police officers. FINANCIAL IMPACT The funds in the Seized Property Account are confiscated funds from drug arrests. The Colorado Revised Statutes stipulates that these funds are to be used for the benefit of the police department. In addition, the funds from the Bulletproof Vest Partners Program will aid in the purchase of these vests.
