TITLE AN ORDINANCE DESIGNATING THE ST. MARY'S SCHOOL, 211 E. MESA AVE., AS A LOCAL HISTORIC LANDMARK [Sd. Shall City Council designate St. Mary's School as a local Pueblo Historic Landmark, pursuant to the Historic Preservation Code, Title IV, Chapter 14 of the Pueblo Municipal Code. RECOMMENDATION Adoption of Ordinance BACKGROUND As is detailed in the Historic Preservation Commission's recommendation, the St. Mary's School was found to have "sign cant character, interest and value, as part of the development, heritage, and cultural characteristics of the City" (Sec. 4- 14- %a)(1a)). It is further found to be "associated with the life of a person or persons significant in Pueblo's past" (Sec. 4-14-8(a)(1 a)). At the time this school was built in 1924 it was considered one of the best parochial schools in Colorado. The people who worked and paid for the sc were poor but proud Slovenian immigrants who made many sacrifices to get the best education possible for their children. The thousands of Pueblo students who graduated from St. Mary's from 1924 to 1971 excelled in many aspects of life. They became doctors, teachers, principals, bankers, as well as superintendents and foremen at the CF &I Steel Corp. Many became religious leaders around the world. The 1924 Pueblo Chieftain article announcing completion of the school described it as the most prominent structure north of the Steel Mill and south of the Arkansas River. It has retained this status throughout its history. It was constructed largely of reused brick from the Eilers' Smelter, which was acquired and demolished by St. Mary's Parishioners for the purpose of constructing the school on the site. Findings of staff, the Historic Preservation Commission, and the Planning and Zoning Commission are attached. FINANCIAL IMPACT No financial impact.
