ORDINANCE NO. 6722
AN ORDINANCE ABOLISHING THE DEPARTMENT OF
ANIMAL CONTROL AND AMENDING SECTION 10 OF
CHAPTER 4 OF TITLE XI OF THE 1971 CODE OF
ORDINANCES RELATING THERETO
WHEREAS, Ordinance No. 5723, effective January 1, 1992 created the Department of
Animal Control and transferred to it all Animal Control functions previously performed within
the Pueblo Police Department; and
WHEREAS, privatization of many functions formerly performed by the Department of Animal
Control makes it in the best interests of the City of Pueblo to return all remaining Animal Control
functions to the Pueblo Police Department; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to the provisions of Section 4 -6 of the City Charter, the City Manager
has recommended that the Department of Animal Control be abolished, with all Animal Control
functions to be returned to the Pueblo Police Department;
NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PUEBLO that:

SECTION 1. Department Abolished
The Department of Animal Control, established by Ordinance No. 5723, is hereby abolished.
SECTION 2. Functions of Department of Animal Control
All functions of the Department of Animal Control including but not limited to all those
functions assigned to that Department by statute, City ordinance or directive of the City Manager,
are hereby transferred to the Pueblo Police Department.
SECTION 3. Employees of Department of Animal Control
All current employees of the Department of Animal Control, except the Administrative
Technician, are hereby assigned to the Pueblo Police Department.
SECTION 4. Director of Animal Control
Upon abolition of the Department of Animal Control, the Director of Animal Control will revert
to her formerly held classified service position of Animal Control Officer under provisions of section
8 -6 of the City Charter.
SECTION 5. Ordinance Amendment
Section 11 -4 -10 of the 1971 Code of Ordinances is hereby amended to read as follows:
[The Director of Animal Control and all] All Animal Control Officers employed by the City are
hereby designated and appointed Animal Control Officers and peace officers authorized and vested
with the power to enforce the provisions of this Chapter. Such Animal Control Officers shall act
under the direction and supervision of the [Director of Animal Control] Chief of Police or his
designee and shall be responsible to him or her for the carrying out of their duties as Animal Control
Officers.
SECTION 6. This ordinance shall become effective on October 1, 2001.
