EDWARD TELLER HOUSE, AS A LOCAL HISTORIC LANDMARK
SUMMARY:
th
The applicant is requesting to designate 314 West 18 Street, the Edward Teller
House, as a local landmark.
PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION:
None.
BACKGROUND:
The property owner is requesting to designate 314 West 18th Street, the Edward Teller
House, as a local Landmark. The applicant provided documentation to demonstrate that
the residence was constructed in 1918 and associated with Edward Teller, quarry
owner; Dr. James H. Risley, Pueblo, Superintendent of Pueblo City Schools, and Matt
Peulen, two-time County Commissioner. The applicant is seeking designation to honor
its past as well as to utilize the state tax credit for rehabilitation. The home was also
considered for inclusion into the North Side Historic District in 2007; however, the
property owner, at that time, requested the property be removed from the district. The
residence qualifies under landmark Criteria 1A, significant events/people, for having
direct association with Edward Teller, Matt Peulen, and especially Dr. Risely who was
the first superintendent of District 60 and published books on education theory
nationally. The building also qualifies for nomination under criteria 2A, architecture, as a
good example of a Craftsman style home. The subject property is in the 2022, Pueblo
Comprehensive Plan Urban Neighborhoods Future Land Use area, and the
landmarking is compatible with the goals of the plan, which highlights the importance of
expanding local Landmarks. A detailed review of the Comp Plan compliance is
discussed in the staff report, for case number HPC-23-05.
