INTRODUCED April 12, 2021 BY: Ed Brown MEMBER OF CITY COUNCIL APPROVED: PRESIDENT OF CITY COUNCIL ATTESTED BY: ACTING CITY CLERK City Clerk’s Office Item # M-9 BACKGROUND PAPER FOR PROPOSED RESOLUTION COUNCIL MEETING DATE: April 12, 2021 TO: President Lawrence W. Atencio and Members of City Council CC: Nicholas A. Gradisar, Mayor VIA: Belinda Kimball, Acting City Clerk FROM: Steven Meier, Director of Parks and Recreation SUBJECT: A RESOLUTION RENAMING THE PARK CURRENTLY KNOWN AS STARLITE PARK TO LAURA’S PARK SUMMARY: Attached is a Resolution for City Council consideration that would rename Starlite Park to Laura’s Park. The renaming of the park would memorialize former Puebloan and FBI Special Agent Laura Schwartzenberger, who was tragically killed in the line of duty on February 2, 2021. PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION: Not applicable to this Resolution. BACKGROUND: On March 15, 2021, during a City Council Work Session, Janice Madrid and Jeanette Garcia, representing the “For Love of Laura” Committee, made a presentation to City Council and requested that the small southside neighborhood Starlite Park be renamed in honor of former Puebloan and FBI Special Agent Laura Schwartzenberger, who was tragically killed in the line of duty on February 2, 2021. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: The cost to replace park name signage will be done through donations. The “For Love of Laura” Committee (“Committee”) has offered to assist with raising funds to replace the old playground in Starlite Park with a newer playground, and to add a sidewalk leading from street parking along Starlite Drive to the new playground. The Parks and Recreation Department will assist the Committee and the neighborhood surrounding the park with the process of identifying a playground design and receiving purchasing estimates. Director, Steven Meier, also committed an in-kind donation from the Parks and Recreation Department in the form of labor to install the new playground. BOARD/COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION: Not applicable to this Resolution. STAKEHOLDER PROCESS: Request for name change is from neighborhood residents and the “For Love of Laura” Committee. ALTERNATIVES: If this Resolution is not approved, the name of the park will remain as Starlite Park. RECOMMENDATION: Approval of the Resolution. Attachments: Proposed Resolution
