PS1809, SELF CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS GRANT FUND SUMMARY: Should City Council authorize the transfer of funds to purchase thermal imaging cameras. PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION: Approval and appropriation of Department of Homeland Security Grant Award EMW-2017-FO- 05403 along with the creation of project PS1809. BACKGROUND: This ordinance will appropriate $30,000 from the public safety grant match fund to project PS1809 “Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus Grant Fund”. These requested funds will provide integrated thermal imaging cameras on our new SCBAs that are being purchased through the original grant appropriation. These cameras are used to locate victims in a fire and other rescue situations and are also critical for interior firefighting. They allow firefighters to assess the environment for changing fire conditions and to locate a fire when heavy smoke obscures all vision. These cameras are a mission critical item and will be used on every fire scene. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: A reduction of $30,000.00 to the Public Safety Grant fund. Staff time will be required for project management, as well as grant monitoring and reporting. BOARD/COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION: Not applicable. STAKEHOLDER PROCESS: Not applicable. ALTERNATIVES: None. RECOMMENDATION: Approval of the Ordinance.
