BACKGROUND PAPER FOR PROPOSED
ORDINANCE
COUNCIL MEETING DATE:
April 8, 2019
TO: President Dennis E. Flores and Members of City Council
CC: Nicholas A. Gradisar, Mayor
VIA: Brenda Armijo, Acting City Clerk
FROM: Steven Meier, Director of Planning and Community Development
SUBJECT: AN ORDINANCE CHANGING THE STREET NAME OF TOWERS DRIVE
TO TOWER ROAD
SUMMARY:
The applicant is requesting to change the street name from Towers Drive to Tower Road.
PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION:
None.
BACKGROUND:
The applicant is requesting to change the private street name of Towers Drive to Tower
Road. This request was filed by Vestas Towers America and is strongly supported by the
City’s Transportation and GIS Departments. The current Towers Drive name is not used
by Vestas, potentially making it difficult for emergency responders to locate the property.
There are no properties addressed off of Towers Drive as Vestas has used Tower Road
for their address since opening in 2009. In addition, the address used to find the property
through google maps is 100 Tower Road.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
There are no financial implications for the City.
BOARD/COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION:
The Planning and Zoning Commission, at their March 13, 2019 Regular Meeting, voted
6-0 (Lujan-Slak absent) to recommend approval.
STAKEHOLDER PROCESS:
The Planning Department sent out Notice of the Planning and Zoning Commission Public
Hearing to all property owners located within 300 feet of the subject property.
A Public Notice poster was placed on the subject property 15 days prior to the Public
Hearing.
ALTERNATIVES:
If City Council does not approve this Ordinance, the current street name would remain.
Upon request of City Council, the Ordinance could be returned to the Planning and Zoning
Commission for consideration of proposed modifications.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approval of the Ordinance.
