Genealogical Society of Hispanic America
P. O. Box 3040
Pueblo,CO 81005
June 24, 2018
Mr. Sam Asad
City Manager, 1 City Hall Place
Pueblo,CO 81003
Dear Mr.Asad:
On the advice of Ray Aguilera, City Councilman, I am writing this letter on behalf of the Genealogical
Society of Hispanic America as co-chair of our twenty-ninth annual conference being held in Pueblo
August 17-19. We have a chapter in Pueblo called the Fray Angelico Chavez Chapter founded in 1989.
Our mission is to promote Hispanic genealogical and historical research and education and to expand
awareness of Hispanic culture, history and traditions. Our mission certainly fits in with the City of
Pueblo's mission of pride in our community, its history, work ethic and diverse culture.
Our theme this year is"Walking the Paths of our Ancestors: Maps, Migrations and Destinations."This
fits in perfectly with El Pueblo Museum's current exhibit on Borderlands and the Treaty of Guadalupe
Hidalgo. We will have many scholars addressing this topic along with other topics important to not only
Hispanics but all people. To find out more about us,our website is gsha.net.
We are asking the City of Pueblo for a$500 sponsorship to help defray either costs with either the
reception or bringing our keynote speaker, Dr Manual Garcia y Griego, a professor at the University of
New Mexico and scholar with expertise on the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and Southwest studies. We
will give the City of Pueblo credit in all our advertising and invite city council members to attend the
reception. The conference will be held at the Rawlings library and we expect 200 attendees. The
attendees will be bringing their dollars to many businesses in Pueblo over five days. Our official hotel is
the Marriott and we expect people from all over the state and country to attend.CSU-Pueblo is
sponsoring five students to come to the conference and this is one of our goals to get as many of our
youth to attend as possible. The Hispanic population is almost 50 percent in Pueblo County and our
conferences are about sharing knowledge about this diverse culture.
I am attaching a flier about our conference and a tentative schedule. If you would like to meet with me
to discuss this further, my phone number is(719)214-7253.Thank you and Mr.Aguilera for your time.
Very truly yours,
Charlene Garcia Simms 0-0
