HomeMy WebLinkAbout13386 City Clerk’s Office Item # Q-2 Background Paper for Proposed RESOLUTION COUNCIL MEETING DATE: February 8, 2016 TO: President Steve Nawrocki and Members of City Council CC: Sam Azad, City Manager VIA: City Clerk’s Office FROM: Gina Dutcher, City Clerk A RESOLUTION APPOINTING MEMBERS TO THE HUMAN RELATIONS SUBJECT: COMMISSION SUMMARY: This Resolution shall appoint three members to the Human Relations Commission – City appointment for the three-year terms expiring December 31, 2018. The resolution also ratifies a Pueblo City/County Joint Youth Member for a one-year term expiring December 31, 2016. PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION: Appointments to the Human Relations Commission are made on an annual basis selecting st individuals to serve three-year terms expiring on December 31 of each year. BACKGROUND: Following an advertisement published in the Pueblo Chieftain on November 8, 2015 and an announcement on the City Clerk’s webpage seeking volunteers to serve on this committee, applications were received from the following individuals for the terms expiring December 31, 2015: Ed Brown Incumbent, Resident of the City of Pueblo  Doris Kester Incumbent, Resident of the City of Pueblo  Steve Lucero New, Resident of the City of Pueblo  Pete Judiscak New, Resident of the City of Pueblo  Betty Jo Aragon New, Resident of the City of Pueblo  Jesse Sena New, Resident of the City of Pueblo  Ryan Madic Incumbent, Youth Appointment  Incumbent Rebecca Wasil did not submit an application for reappointment. Council member Steve Nawrocki reviewed applications, interviewed the candidates, and recommends incumbents Ed Brown, Doris Kester for reappointment. However, Councilman Nawrocki stated the remaining four applicant’s qualifications were so similar that he believes Council, as an entity, should vote by ballot for the remaining position. Mr. Nawrocki does concur with the Pueblo County Commissioners for the joint Youth Appointment of Ryan Madic. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: This is a volunteer committee, no compensation is given. BOARD/COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION: None STAKEHOLDER PROCESS: None ALTERNATIVES: Council could remove the Resolution from the Agenda, request that the recruitment process be extended, and order the public notice for applications be republished in order to receive additional applications for consideration. Attachments: RESOLUTION NO. 13386 A RESOLUTION APPOINTING MEMBERS TO THE PUEBLO HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PUEBLO, COLORADO, that: SECTION 1 The following individuals are hereby appointed to the Pueblo Human Relations Commission - City Appointment for a three-year term expiring December 31, 2018: Ed Brown Doris Kester Steve Lucero SECTION 2. Ryan Madic is hereby appointed to the Pueblo Human Relations Commission–Joint City/County Youth Appointment to complete the one-year term expiring December 31, 2016. SECTION 3 The officers and staff of the City are directed and authorized to perform any and all acts consistent with the intent of this Resolution to effectuate the policies and procedures described herein.
