The renaming of the park will honor the individuals who have served and are currently serving in the military. PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION: None. BACKGROUND: At the December 14, 2015 City Council work session representatives from veterans groups within the Pueblo region made a request to rename the Lake Minnequa Park and Open Space Area to commemorate and acknowledge the veterans who have, and are currently serving, in the military. As a follow up to the City Council work session, a resolution has been drafted for City Council consideration to rename the park. The park area and lake were originally named Lake Minnequa in 1882, and served as an amusement park, entertainment venue for dancing and musical performances, community theaters and social clubs, swimming, boating, and fishing areas, and park roads and walkways for 60 years, and later on a more limited scale operated until the mid-1980’s. In 2008, with funding from the Great Outdoors Colorado Trust Fund, the City purchased 240 acres including the lake and surrounding shoreline areas from Evraz/Rocky Mountain Steel Mills, and combined it with other city-owned property and developed the 280-acre Lake Minnequa Park and Open Space Area as a park, open space, trails, and regional storm water facility. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: The costs for changing the name of the park are not known at this time. BOARD/COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION: None. STAKEHOLDER PROCESS: None. ALTERNATIVES: If the resolution is not approved, the park and open space area will remain the Lake Minnequa Park and Open Space Area. RECOMMENDATION: The resolution has been prepared for City Council consideration without a recommendation. Attachments: None.
