SUBJECT: AN ORDINANCE RELATING TO THE FISCAL YEAR 2014 STAFFING
ORDINANCE AND AMENDING SAME BY REVISING POSITIONS WITHIN THE
PUBLIC WORKS-TRANSPORTATION DIVISION
SUMMARY:
The Department of Public Works-Transportation Division requests to adjust its staffing by
reclassifying the Senior Clerk Typist position to an Administrative Technician.
PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION:
In December 2013, City Council approved the annual Staffing Ordinance for the 2014 fiscal
year.
BACKGROUND:
The Department of Public Works-Transportation Division requests to adjust its staffing by
reclassifying the Senior Clerk Typist position to an Administrative Technician. The Human
Resources Department performed a reclassification review of the Senior Clerk Typist position in
the Public Works-Transportation Division. The reclassification review found that the Senior Clerk
Typist position in the Public Works-Transportation Division, performs job duties that are higher
level than those described in the corresponding job description; and it was recommended that
the scope and level of responsibility are in line with and are more adequately represented by the
Administrative Technician job classification. The result of this action will be no net increase in
staffing.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
Funding for the reclassified position of Administrative Technician will come from the general
fund. The difference in the salary for the remainder of 2014 is approximately $1,770.

ALTERNATIVES:
There is only one option for the Department of Public Works-Transportation Division should this
ordinance not pass. The Department would keep the position of Senior Clerk Typist and re-
assign the higher level job duties to another employee within the Division; however, this Division
currently operates with two other employees at this time.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approval of the Ordinance.
