A RESOLUTION NAMING THE OUTDOOR PLAZA SPACE
AT THE CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS MONUMENT
INCLUDING THE MEDIAN LOCATED IN THE 100 BLOCK
OF ABRIENDO AVENUE AS THE CHRISTOPHER
COLUMBUS PIAZZA
WHEREAS, the Sons of Italy have adopted the median in the 100 Block of
Abriendo Avenue through the Adopt-A-Streetscape Program; and
WHERES, the Sons of Italy have contributed financially to the restoration of the
Christopher Columbus Monument and enhancements to the area;
WHEREAS, a Revocable Permit has been issued to the Sons of Italy, for the use
of the public right-of-way in the 100 block of East Abriendo Avenue for the placement of
a donor wall, flagpole, and globes; NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PUEBLO, that:
SECTION 1.
The Pueblo City Council hereby allows donor plaques on the existing and new
flagpoles, fly the United States flag along with the Italian flag, and names the median
area around the Christopher Columbus Monument in the 100 Block of Abriendo
Avenue, as “Christopher Columbus Piazza.”
SECTION 2.
The officers and staff of the City are directed and authorized to perform any and
all acts consistent with the intent of the Resolution to effectuate the policies and
procedures described herein.

SUMMARY:
The Order of the Sons of Italy Southern Colorado Lodge No. 2738 is requesting to be
allowed to mount donor plaques on the existing and new flagpoles, fly the United States
flag along with the Italian flag and name the median area around the Christopher
Columbus Monument “Christopher Columbus Piazza.” The Sons of Italy have agreed to
pay for the new flagpole, plaques, flags, and sign for the Piazza.
PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION:
City Council, per Resolution No. 12792, has issued a revocable permit to the Sons of
Italy to allow for the installation of donor walls, globes, and flag poles on the right-of-
way at the Christopher Columbus Monument.
BACKGROUND:
The Resolution would allow the plaza area and median located at the 100 block of
Abriendo Avenue to be named the Christopher Columbus Piazza. The Sons of Italy
have adopted the median through the City’s Adopt-A-Streetscape program and have
taken an interest in enhancing the 100 block median area around the Columbus
Monument. The Sons of Italy have raised matching funds for the State Historical Fund
grant to repair and restore the monument. They have also raised funds to furnish
improvements such as donor walls, a new additional flag pole, and signs with the
Piazza.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
No financial impact.
BOARD/COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION:
The Streetscape Advisory Committee, Revocable Permit Committee, and the
Department of Planning and Community Development have reviewed and
recommended the enhancements.
STAKEHOLDER PROCESS:
City Council and City staff are the Stakeholders.
ALTERNATIVES:
None.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the Resolution.
