The importance of STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) has been widely recognized in the teaching community for a number of years. According to the National Science Teachers' Association, "science, technology, engineering, and math education is on everyone's mind... By coordinating science and math courses with technology and engineering courses, teachers can give students a better understanding of the world in which they live. Few of today's students understand the way in which thesefields benefit our society or the variety of career opportunities that are available to them." Science education is a natural fit for the Bessemer Historical Society, which is charged with preserving the history and culture of Pueblo's steel mill and nearby mining industry. This summer we will encourage students to attend free, informal science class sessions on Saturdays at the Steelworks museum, learning about science, technology, engineering and math. Some examples of learning activities include computer programming and engineering with Lego robots; electricity and magnetism with a Van De Graaff generator; economics and environmental reclamation with a chocolate - chip- cookie mining exercise; and propulsion, force and motion with air - powered rockets. We will particularly target girls and underprivileged students in the Bessemer neighborhood, but the program will be open to all Pueblo students. Would you fund our program through this partnership so that we may offer this to students free of.charge? Following are the possibilities: $5000 - nine free Science Saturdays $ As-7, ). oz.) $2500 — five free Science Saturdays t $1500 - three free Science Saturdays We truly appreciate your consideration and look forward to the possibilities.
