TITLE
AN ORDINANCE CHANGING THE NAME OF A PORTION OF GRAND AVENUE TO
ALAN HAMEL AVENUE LOCATED WITHIN THE HISTORIC ARKANSAS RIVERWALK
PROJECT, FILING ONE
ISSUE
Should City Council approve a request to change the name of a portion of Grand
Avenue to Alan Hamel Avenue?
RECOMMENDATION
The Planning and Zoning Commission, at their October 10, 2012 Regular Meeting,
voted 7-0 to recommend approval.
BACKGROUND
The proposed street name change is requested to honor Alan Hamel, who retired from
the Board of Water Works, after 51 years of employment. Mr. Hamel was notably
involved in the construction of the Riverwalk and other significant City projects and is
highly deserving of being honored. Staff did not support the location of the requested
name change and offered three alternative locations:
1. Rename the north/south leg of the Riverwalk from Riverwalk Place to Alan Hamel
Avenue;
2. Give this portion of Grand Avenue an “honorary” name of Alan Hamel Avenue; or
3. Name a new street in a future development to Alan Hamel Avenue.
The Planning and Zoning Commission considered the recommendations from City staff,
but ultimately voted unanimously to support the street name change as requested.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The financial impacts associated with replacing the street signs will be approximately
$1,700. Additionally, the City Transportation Department, Pueblo Transit and MV
Transportation will have the financial impact of changing their addresses on all print
materials, business cards, etc.
