WHEREAS, there are currently funds available in the E-911 Telephone Charge Fund reserves for said project. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PUEBLO, that: SECTION 1. Expenditures for the virtual server equipment will be paid from account number 214- 0000-421.70-05. SECTION 3. This Ordinance shall be effective immediately upon passage. INTRODUCED: February 27, 2012 BY: Judy Weaver COUNCIL PERSON PASSED AND APPROVED: March 26, 2012 Background Paper for Proposed ORDINANCE DATE: February 27, 2012 AGENDA ITEM # R-2 DEPARTMENT: PUEBLO POLICE DEPARTMENT – CHIEF LUIS VELEZ SUPPORT SERVICES DIVISION – CAPTAIN KENNY RIDER COMMUNICATIONS CENTER – MANAGER LAURA WITTRUP TITLE AN ORDINANCE BUDGETING AND APPROPRIATING FUNDS IN THE AMOUNT OF $40,000 FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF MULTIPLE PUBLIC SAFETY SERVER HARDWARE RESPONSIBLE FOR RUNNING THE POLICE AND FIRE DISPATCH AND RECORD MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS ISSUE Should City Council budget and appropriate funds in the amount of $40,000 for the replacement of Multiple Public Safety Server Hardware for the Police and Fire Dispatch and Record Management Systems? RECOMMENDATION The Police Department, the Department of Information Technology and the Pueblo Fire Department recommend approval of this Ordinance. BACKGROUND The Pueblo Police and Fire Departments are in serious need of an equipment upgrade to the server environment used to operate and maintain the public safety computer applications for the following reasons: The public safety servers currently reside on equipment that has reached the end of its useful life. Annual maintenance and warranty costs on the existing servers are extremely expensive. The annual maintenance and warranty costs on the existing servers equals approximately 50% of the cost to replace the entire server fleet. The servers for the Stratus (Police Department) and Highplains (Fire Department) systems must be replaced this year to ensure that all public safety applications are housed in a stable server environment able to manage the data growth and performance requirements needed by both Departments. Replacement of the servers will be done utilizing a virtual server environment along with a dedicated storage area network. Utilization of a virtual environment provides the following benefits: Increased reliability and reduced costs in server hardware through server consolidation Improved speed and system availability Simplified system and storage management Improved disaster recovery options of mission critical systems and data Reduction in power/HVAC costs FINANCIAL IMPACT The amount of $40,000 shall be budgeted and appropriated from the E-911 Telephone Charge Fund reserves for said project.
