NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PUEBLO, that: SECTION 1. The City Council hereby approves and authorizes submission of the grant application to the Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, a copy of which is attached hereto, for the purchase of a new air compressor. The President of the City Council is authorized to execute and submit the grant application in the name of the City. SECTION 2. This Resolution shall become effective upon final passage and approval. INTRODUCED August 22, 2011 BY: Vera Ortegon COUNCILPERSON Background Paper for Proposed RESOLUTION AGENDA ITEM # M-9 DATE: August 22, 2011 DEPARTMENT: CHRISTOPHER RILEY, FIRE CHIEF TITLE A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING SUBMISSION OF AN APPLICATION FOR A GRANT TO THE FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY UNDER THE ASSISTANCE TO FIREFIGHTERS GRANT PROGRAM FOR THE PURPOSE OF PURCHASING A NEW AIR COMPRESSOR FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ISSUE Should City Council approve an application to the Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program? RECOMMENDATION Approval of the Resolution BACKGROUND The Fire Department currently has one main air compressor that is used to fill SCBA’s (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus). These SCBA’s are used on a daily basis by firefighters in training, fires, and other hazardous incidents. The air compressor is a specialized compressor that is able to fill these SCBA’s. The current air compressor is over 15 years old and the cost of repairs and maintenance is starting to exceed the value of the compressor. This grant would allow for the purchase of a brand new air compressor. This air compressor is vital to the day-to-day operations of the fire department. FINANCIAL IMPACT The grant requires 20% matching funds. Based on the anticipated grant award amount of $60,000, the match would be $12,000 from the City for a total amount of $72,000. If the grant is awarded, the acceptance and appropriation of funds will be presented to City Council for approval consideration by separate ordinance.
