TITLE
A RESOLUTION GRANTING PERMISSION FOR THE PUEBLO CHRISTOPHER
COLUMBUS MONUMENT TO BE LISTED ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF
HISTORIC PLACES UNDER CRITERIA “A” OF THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE
INTERIOR GUIDELINES
ISSUE
Should the City Council support the nomination and grant permission for the inclusion of
the Pueblo Christopher Columbus Monument on the National Register of Historic
Places?
RECOMMENDATION
Approval of the Resolution.
BACKGROUND
The Order Sons of Italy in America, Southern Colorado Lodge #2738 hired architectural
historian, Historitecture, to conduct research and nominate the Pueblo Christopher
Columbus Monument (“Monument”) to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.
After review by the National Register Staff in Denver, the monument was found to be
eligible for inclusion on the register under Criteria “A”. As a Certified Local Government,
the City of Pueblo’s Historic Preservation Commission (“HPC”) conducted a public
hearing on May 12, 2011, and at such meeting approved findings determining the
Monument’s eligibility for inclusion on the National Register under Criteria “A” of the
National Park Service Guidelines.
The Monument is located within City right-of-way in the median of the 100 block of East
Abriendo. The Monument was the earliest such statue west of the Mississippi and
represents American efforts of assimilation by Italian American societies, as well as
other ethnic groups, and it has been a source of pride for over 100 years. National
Register nominations solicit owners consent but they do not require it.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
There will be no financial impact. The monument will be protected by the City’s
Preservation Ordinance, and the median was already adopted and maintained by the
Sons of Italy.
