HomeMy WebLinkAbout12142RESOLUTION NO. 12142 A RESOLUTION NAMING THE OUTDOOR PLAZA AREA AT THE EL PUEBLO HISTORY MUSEUM LOCATED AT 301 NORTH UNION AVENUE AS FOUNDERS’ PLAZA WHEREAS, The El Pueblo Master Plan design identified a plaza to recognize the original founders of Pueblo relating to the El Pueblo trading post of 1842, and; WHEREAS, the City of Pueblo, Urban Renewal Authority of Pueblo, Pueblo Downtown Association, El Pueblo History Museum have the desire to establish the Founders’ Plaza and install sculptures representing the founding individuals of Pueblo; BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PUEBLO, that: SECTION 1. The Pueblo City Council hereby names the outdoor plaza area, as shown on the drawing attached hereto, of the El Pueblo History Museum, located at 301 North Union Avenue, as Founders’ Plaza. RECOMMENDATION Approve the Resolution. BACKGROUND El Pueblo Archeological Site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 as the first settlement in and name sake of Pueblo. In 1996, a master plan was developed to plan the entire block including the museum, the archaeological pavilion and a plaza representing the original founders of Pueblo. The plaza area is owned by the City and was built in 2002 but never named as Founders’ Plaza. The plaza is between the State El Pueblo History Museum and the City’s Dr. Buckles Archaeological Pavilion located at 315 North Union Avenue. The City of Pueblo, Urban Renewal Authority of Pueblo, Pueblo Downtown Association’s Art and Soul Street Gallery and El Pueblo History Museum have been planning the installation of sculptures representing the Founders’ of Pueblo. The first sculpture will be of James P. Beckwourth an African/French trader trapper explorer present at the El Pueblo trading post in the 1840’s. The artist, Reven Marie Swanson, was selected by the Pueblo Art and Soul Street Gallery. Sculptures representing the remaining original founders’ are being planned to be installed in the future. The Urban Renewal Authority of Pueblo is funding the first sculpture. A dedication of the sculpture is planned on May 21, 2011. FINANCIAL IMPACT None.
