(PMP)?

BACKGROUND
Currently, structures within the park are addressed off Pueblo Blvd. These
addresses cause difficulty for emergency response units and the public trying to locate
these structures. This resolution proposes assigning the two main driveways within the
park the following “street” names: Bill Dickey Drive and Rattlesnake Road.
Bill Dickey was an instrumental person in the establishment and history of motor
sports in Pueblo. Dickey was the general manager at Pueblo Motorsports Inc. (PMI), a
nonprofit corporation, for 22 years from 1974 to April of 1996. Dickey was more than
just a general manager, he was one of the 15 members on PMI's original board of
directors, serving as vice president. With the help of Dickey and others, the Pueblo City
Council approved the building of Pueblo Motorsports Park (PMP) on Nov. 25, 1974.
The track was to be built on 900 acres of the 4,400-acre site of the former State
Honor Farm, which is west of Pueblo off Pueblo Boulevard and near U.S. 50. PMP was
built with $195,000 in federal revenue sharing funds appropriated through the City and
County. Pueblo Motorsports, Inc., also raised money for the construction of the track
through car shows and various other projects.
During Dickey’s time as general manager, the Pueblo Motorsports Park thrived.
The drag strip hosted numerous high-profile National Hot Rod Association Winston
World Championship Series races. Drivers including the legendary Don Prudhomme
and world champion Top Fuel dragster driver Gary Beck came to Pueblo to race. Dickey
also was instrumental in establishing the Friday Nite Drags at PMP in 1978, and those
Friday Nite Drags are just as popular today as they were back then.
Thanks to the efforts of the City and County of Pueblo and PMP, plus countless
hours of donated time and donated equipment to the cause, Pueblo Motorsports Park
was completed more than a year ahead of schedule.
On Sept. 13-14, 1975, PMP held its inaugural races, a Winston World
Championship Series event at its quarter-mile drag strip. With Dickey’s help, by 1980, a
record crowd of 9,000 fans watched PMP's annual Winston World Championship event.
With Dickey as the general manager, not only did the dragstrip excel, the Sports
Car Club of America (using the 2.2 mile road course) and Quarter-Midget racing (using
a one-fifth quarter midget track) became mainstays at the Pueblo Motorsports Park
property.
Dickey was a major force in the building of the Pueblo Motorsports Park and he
also put the City of Pueblo on the national motorsports map. It is appropriate to
recognize Dickey by having a road named after him at PMP.
