LEANDER CHURCH, 1402 E. 7 STREET, AS A LOCAL HISTORIC LANDMARK WHEREAS, the City of Pueblo's Historic Preservation Code, Title IV, Chapter 14, declares that the City shall identify, designate and preserve those buildings, objects, monuments, structures and sites which reflect outstanding elements of the community's architectural and cultural heritage; and WHEREAS, the present application was initiated by the property owner, and the City's Historic Preservation Commission has reviewed the application for designation of St. Leander Church as a Local Historic Landmark and has recommended to the Planning and Zoning Commission the designation of this resource; and WHEREAS, the City Planning and Zoning Commission has reviewed the Historic Preservation Commission's recommendation and the designation application and submitted its recommendation thereon for landmark designation to Council; BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PUEBLO, that: SECTION 1. The City Council finds and determines that the St. Leander Church, 1402 E. 7th Street, legally described as Lots 1 through 3, Block 132 Fletcher Hill Addition, and Lots 1 through 3 plus Lots 38 through 40, Block 132, Fletcher Hill Subdivision including a vacated portion of the alley adjacent to Lots 38 through 40, Pueblo, Colorado, is associated with the life of persons significant in the past, and embodies those distinguishing characteristics of an architectural type or engineering specimen; as defined in the Pueblo Historic Preservation Code Section 4 -14 -8. SECTION 2. RECOMMENDATION Adoption of Ordinance, as recommended by the Planning and Zoning Commission at their August 12, 2009 Regular meeting and the Historic Preservation Commission at their June 25, 2009 Regular meeting. BACKGROUND St. Leander Church has occupied a central position in the development of the East Side neighborhood since 1925 when the church was constructed. The church is one of the best, and only, examples of Institutional Spanish Mission Revival architecture in the East Side, and it was designed by the famous Colorado Springs Architect, Thomas MacLaren. The application is signed by the current Bishop of Pueblo who is aware of all benefits and obligations associated with designation. Findings of staff, the Historic Preservation Commission, and the Planning and Zoning Commission are attached. FINANCIAL IMPACT None.
