TITLE
AN ORDINANCE DESIGNATING THE J. A. WAYLAND HOUSE, 330 COLORADO
AVENUE, AS A LOCAL HISTORIC LANDMARK
ISSUE
Shall City Council designate the J.A. Wayland House as a local Pueblo Historic
Landmark, pursuant to the Historic Preservation Code, Title IV, Chapter 14 of the
Pueblo Municipal Code?
RECOMMENDATION
Adoption of the Ordinance, as recommended by the Planning and Zoning Commission
at their April 22, 2010 Work Session and the Historic Preservation Commission at their
Regular Meeting on March 25, 2010.
BACKGROUND
Since its construction in 1886, the J.A. Wayland house is a fine example of a Queen
Anne style residence which adds to the unique historic character of the South
Pueblo/Mesa Junction neighborhood. The house was built by local developer and
publisher J.A. Wayland. Mr. Wayland went onto become a nationally significant
publisher and populist progressive fighting for social reforms such as health care, good
government, and education. The designation is consensual and the owner is aware of
all the benefits and responsibilities conferred by designation.
Findings of staff, the Historic Preservation Commission, and the Planning and Zoning
Commission are attached.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
None.
