RESOLUTION NO. 11947
A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR
COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM
WHEREAS, immigrants from all countries have been an integral part of the development
of the City of Pueblo, and the United States and have contributed to our economy since the
foundation of our community through hard work and commitment to the betterment of society;
and
WHEREAS, such immigrants have made, and continue to make valuable contributions
to our state and nation in areas of agriculture, defense, economy, education, health, politics,
science, and social services; thus improving the quality of life of every Coloradoan; and
WHEREAS, the United States of America was founded on legal and ethical principles
which acknowledge and promote dignity, respect and equality to all citizens, regardless of color
of their skin or their country of origin; and
WHEREAS, we are a country that respects the rule of law, these laws should impact and
affect all equally, our current federal immigration system and legislation is not working efficiently
or effectively;
WHEREAS, our present national immigration system fails even the most basic tests of
economy or humanity, by ignoring the economic realities that propel workers to the United
States and the roles they fill in the American economy, and by ignoring the bonds of family that
pull immigrant workers together and too often, tumultuously apart; and
WHEREAS, comprehensive immigration reform will serve to boost wages for both
native-born and documented immigrant workers, increase tax revenue for all levels of
government, and provide a needed boost to private sector economic activity;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PUEBLO, that
SECTION 1.
The Pueblo City Council urges our United States Senators for Colorado and Third
Congressional District Representative, to support swift and responsible legislative action to
produce equitable, humane, effective and comprehensive federal immigration reform – reform
that enhances American stability, security, and prosperity by: providing for enforceable
immigration laws; family unification; a rate and system of controlled immigration that matches
the needs of our economy; a path to citizenship and social integration for our existing immigrant
workforce and their families; equitable access to higher education for immigrant students
already being educated in American public schools; enhanced enforcement of labor laws; a
system which ultimately aids in border control; and bilateral partnerships with other countries to
promote economic development that will reduce the flow of immigrants.
SECTION 2.
The City Clerk is hereby directed to deliver a certified copy of this Resolution to all
members of the Colorado Congressional Delegation.
