PACHECO, CITY MANAGER JENNY M. EICKELMAN, ASSISTANT CITY MANAGER TITLE A RESOLUTION RENAMING THE PARK CURRENTLY KNOWN AS MINNEQUA PARK TO BESSEMER PARK AND AUTHORIZING THE TRANSFER OF $2,500 FROM THE CONTINGENCIES ACCOUNT IN THE 2010 GENERAL FUND BUDGET TO THE PARKS DEPARTMENT'S 2010 GENERAL FUND OPERATING BUDGET ISSUE Should the City Council rename the park currently known as Minnequa Park to Bessemer Park? BACKGROUND In 1954, the Minnequa Business and Professional Men's Association requested that the name of Bessemer Park be changed to Minnequa Park. On June 7, 1954, Resolution 555 was passed renaming the park. Regular community meetings have been held by Council Member Ray Aguilera, and at one of the meetings of approximately 100 people, there was community support to change the name of Minnequa Park back to the original name of Bessemer Park. Also, with the addition of the new Minnequa Lake Park, it may be confusing to have two Minnequa Parks in the same general area. RECOMMENDATION This Resolution is at the request of City Council Member Aguilera. FINANCIAL IMPACT The cost to change the name on the two signs at the park is estimated to be $2,500. Funds in the amount of $2,500 will be transferred from the Contingencies Account in the 2010 General Fund Budget to the Parks Department's 2010 General Fund operating budget to fund the replacement of the signs at the park (see attached spreadsheet for the balance in the contingencies account.)
