TITLE
A RESOLUTION RENAMING THE PARK CURRENTLY KNOWN AS
PUEBLO / PUEBLA PLAZA PARK TO SISTER CITIES PLAZA PARK
ISSUE
Should the City Council rename Pueblo /Puebla Plaza Park to Sister Cities Plaza Park?
BACKGROUND
Since the inception of the Sister City Commission 33 years ago, the City of Pueblo has
added 5 (five) more cities of other nations to the list of international cities that have
mutual interests and similar characteristics. These cities are Chihuahua, Mexico;
Weifang, China; Lucca Sicula, Sicily; Bergamo, Italy; and Maribor, Slovenia. The first
city to participate with Pueblo in this project was the City of Puebla, Mexico. Upon
visiting Chihuahua, Mexico, Council Members Randy Thurston and Larry Atencio visited
"Sister City Park" and have suggested the current Pueblo /Puebla Plaza Park in Pueblo
be renamed Sister Cities Plaza Park. This renaming of the Park would reflect and
acknowledge the increased number of cites the City of Pueblo has developed relations
with since the first Sister City Understanding was formed. Furthermore, it is
recommended by the Sister City Commission of Pueblo and has the approval of the
Reyes Family (Mr. Henry Reyes was an integral part of the creation of the
Pueblo /Puebla Commission, developing the first Sister City relationship with Puebla,
Mexico, and the creation of the existing park) to move forward with this initiative.
