ISSUE
Should the City Council approve the submittal of a 2008 Grant Application to the
Colorado Department of Local Affairs Energy Mineral Impact Assistance Fund monies
relating to the Pueblo Southside Fire Station Project and authorize the President of City
Council to execute same?
RECOMMENDATION
Approval of the Resolution.
The grant request is for supplemental funds to assist with the construction of the new
fire station on the property located east of Pueblo Blvd along Surfwood Lane. The new
fire station project will address a priority goal of the Pueblo City Council to modernize
City facilities and infrastructure including more fire stations. The project will complete the
construction of a new Fire Station #9 estimated to be 6,400 square feet including a
2,400 square foot fire truck bay and 4,000 square foot fire fighter quarters. The station
will have the capability of housing two fire trucks and initially will be staffed with three
firefighters that could be expanded to six firefighters. The building will be a frame
construction with either a stucco or brick type finish. The station will serve a 5-6 square
mile area of the south side of the city for medical response and a combined response
area of 10 -12 square miles for fire response to structural fires and emergency calls
requiring response from more than one station.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The total cost for the Southside Fire Station is estimated to be $1.75 million. The DOLA
Energy Mineral Impact Assistance Fund grant request is requesting $500,000 to
supplement the construction cost of the fire station. The City's cash matching funds for
the DOLA grant application is $750,000, with a total estimated cost for the fire station of
$1.25 million. The City's matching funds will be provided from the revenues from the
Police and Fire Stations construction funds.
