A RESOLUTION TEMPORARILY AMENDING THE CITY OF PUEBLO STAFFING LEVEL FOR
THE POLICE DEPARTMENT BY ALLOWING THE DEPARTMENT TO HAVE THREE
ADDITIONAL POLICE PATROL OFFICERS FROM APRIL 1, 2008 THROUGH DECEMBER 31,
2008. '
ISSUE
Should the Police Department be authorized to temporarily increase staffing by a maximum of
three police patrol officers above the normal staffing ; levels during the period from April 1, 2008
through December 31, 2008 due .to anticipated vacancies. This will allow the City to, take
advantage of the opportunity to get new officers trained in the police academy and to minimize
the impact of working short- handed until the next police academy is held in 2009.
RECOMMENDATION
The department recommends approval of this resolution.
BACKGROUND
The Police Chief and the City Manager have determined that the needs of the Police
Department will best be met by authorizing the Police Department to hire three additional - police
patrol officers from April 1, 2008 4hrough December 31, 2008 due to vacancies expected to
occur after the start of the police training academy. The three additional positions will be
absorbed through attrition likely to occur well before December 31, 2008. There will only be one
basic training academy for new police officers in 2008, so if this opportunity is missed, the Police
Department will have to operate understaffed until at least March of 2009.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
There will be'no financial impact. There are currently three officers on long -term unpaid leave
and the salary savings from their absence without pay will cover the cost of the three additional
police officers.
