VEGA TITLE A RESOLUTION TEMPORARILY AMENDING THE CITY OF PUEBLO STAFFING LEVEL FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT BY ALLOWING THE DEPARTMENT TO HAVE 11 ADDITIONAL STAFF MEMBERS FROM DECEMBER 4, 2006 THROUGH FEBRUARY 2007 AND AUTHORIZING THE TRANSFER OF $65,000 FROM THE TERMINAL PAY ACCOUNT TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT BUDGET ISSUE Should the Fire Department be authorized to add additional staff members from December 4, 2006 through February 2007 and transfer money from the Terminal Pay Account to the Fire Department Budget due to retirements? RECOMMENDATION The Ordinance be approved. BACKGROUND The Fire Chief, the Director of Human Resources, and the City Manager have determined that the needs of the Fire Department will best be met by allowing the maximum staffing level for the Fire Department to be temporarily increased for a short period of time. The Fire Department expects to lose at least 17 staff members due to retirements by the end of February 2007. In order to provide uninterrupted service the new firefighters need to be hired in advance so that there is enough time for them to receive appropriate training and to be ready to fully function in their new positions prior to the retirements. FINANCIAL IMPACT Funds in the amount of $65,000 will be transferred from the Terminal Pay Account to the Fire Department budget for December 2006. $100,000 has been allocated in the 2007 budget for the Fire Department for January and February.
