HomeMy WebLinkAbout10576RESOLUTION NO. 10576 A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF MORE SMOKE -FREE COLORADO COMMUNITIES WHEREAS, numerous studies have found that tobacco smoke is a major contributor to indoor air pollution, and that breathing secondhand smoke is a cause of disease in healthy nonsmokers, including heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease, lung and breast cancer; and WHEREAS, a recent study in Pueblo, Colorado found a nearly 305 decline in hospital admissions for heart attacks following the implementation of a comprehensive smoke -free indoor air ordinance — demonstrating the potential, rapid benefits communities can achieve through the use of smoke -free indoor air protections; and WHEREAS, secondhand smoke is particularly hazardous to elderly people, individuals with cardiovascular disease, and individuals with impaired respiratory function, including asthmatics and those with obstructive airway disease; and WHEREAS, the National Cancer Institute determined in 1999 (Monograph #10) that secondhand smoke is responsible for the early deaths of 49,000 Americans annually; and WHEREAS, children exposed to secondhand smoke have an increased risk of asthma, respiratory infections, sudden infant death syndrome, developmental abnormalities, and cancer; and WHEREAS, an estimated 500 adults, children, and babies in Colorado will die this year as a result of others' smoking (secondhand smoke and smoking during pregnancy); and WHEREAS, 11,400 Colorado children under 18 years of age become new daily smokers each year. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PUEBLO. that: We, the members of the Pueblo City Council, join our fellow Coloradans in support of smoke -free public places and workplaces for the purpose of reducing the harm from tobacco smoke to help make Colorado a healthier state. This resolution is placed on the agenda at the request of Council Member Sova. FINANCIAL IMPACT None.
