HomeMy WebLinkAbout10545RESOLUTION NO. 10545 A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF PUEBLO POLICE DEPARTMENT TO APPLY FOR A 2006 AUTO THEFT PREVENTION GRANT WHEREAS, the City of Pueblo Police Department is requesting authorization to submit a grant application to the Colorado Department of Public Safety for 2006 Auto Theft Prevention funding which will allow for increased enforcement; and WHEREAS, the requested term of the grant covers the 2006 calendar year; and WHEREAS, the undertaking of this project is in the best interest of the City and will benefit the health, welfare and safety of the citizens of the City; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PUEBLO, that: SECTION 1. The request from the City of Pueblo Police Department to submit a 2006 Colorado Department of Public Safety Auto Theft Prevention Grant is hereby approved. SECTION 2. This resolution shall become effective upon its passage. Billings, Jr. TITLE A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF PUEBLO POLICE DEPARTMENT TO APPLY FOR A 2006 AUTO THEFT PREVENTION GRANT ISSUE Should the City of Pueblo Police Department be allowed to submit a Colorado Automobile Theft Prevention Grant in the amount of $43,721? RECOMMENDATION The City of Pueblo Police Department recommends approval to help reduce the number of auto thefts occurring in the city. This grant application, if approved, will allow the Police Department to increase its efforts in reducing the number of auto thefts occurring in the city throughout the 2006 grant year. Community awareness efforts will be established to educate the public utilizing public service announcements, billboards, anti -auto theft brochures and community /neighborhood watch meetings. A fully equipped bait car utilizing a variety of installed technologies will be placed in the top auto theft spots based on crime analysis, police information and citizen tips. A thief who tries to steal the car will be video and audio tape- recorded for use in prosecution. Additionally, multiple sensors within the car will initiate a silent alarm and a real time GPS system will be monitored by the dispatch center that will contact patrol officers to follow the vehicle. FINANCIAL IMPACT There is no financial impact to the City of Pueblo Police Department. This grant will cover the cost of the officers involved in monitoring the grant as well as the cost of a quality bait car package. Printing of the Watch Your Car / Anti - Vehicle Theft brochures is included also.
