TITLE
A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF PUEBLO POLICE
DEPARTMENT TO APPLY FOR A 2006 AUTO THEFT PREVENTION GRANT
ISSUE
Should the City of Pueblo Police Department be allowed to submit a Colorado
Automobile Theft Prevention Grant in the amount of $43,721?
RECOMMENDATION
The City of Pueblo Police Department recommends approval to help reduce the
number of auto thefts occurring in the city.
This grant application, if approved, will allow the Police Department to increase
its efforts in reducing the number of auto thefts occurring in the city throughout
the 2006 grant year. Community awareness efforts will be established to
educate the public utilizing public service announcements, billboards, anti -auto
theft brochures and community /neighborhood watch meetings. A fully equipped
bait car utilizing a variety of installed technologies will be placed in the top auto
theft spots based on crime analysis, police information and citizen tips. A thief
who tries to steal the car will be video and audio tape- recorded for use in
prosecution. Additionally, multiple sensors within the car will initiate a silent
alarm and a real time GPS system will be monitored by the dispatch center that
will contact patrol officers to follow the vehicle.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
There is no financial impact to the City of Pueblo Police Department. This grant
will cover the cost of the officers involved in monitoring the grant as well as the
cost of a quality bait car package. Printing of the Watch Your Car / Anti - Vehicle
Theft brochures is included also.
