BACKGROUND
Minnequa Park Ball Field, which is located in the northeast corner of Minnequa
Park, has been the home of not only Pueblo's greatest fast -pitch softball players,
but some of the finest players in the country for over 20 years. Minnequa Park
Ball Field hosts numerous fast - pitch, slow - pitch, youth baseball leagues and
tournaments every summer.
Joe Santos was one of the pioneers of youth softball in Pueblo. Joe spent his
summers working with children of all ages to teach them to learn and appreciate
the game of softball. During his lifetime, Joe was inducted into the Amateur
Softball Association Hall -of- Honor; he coached the Pueblo Bandits men's fast -
pitch softball team to eight world tournaments; he coached the Pueblo Bandits to
three top four finishes in the North American Fast -Pitch Association World
Series. Joe was employed at the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo as a
pysch tech for over 40 years, the City of Pueblo Parks and Recreation
Department as Minnequa Park Ball Field's coordinator, the Pueblo Parks and
Recreation Department's Men's Basketball program coordinator for the past 25
years, and men's fast -pitch director for 20 years.
During his travels as the coach for the Pueblo Bandit's men's fast -pitch softball
team, Joe would take it upon himself to be Pueblo's "Goodwill Ambassador" and
spent much of his time promoting our fine community.
Mr. Santos passed away on May 17, 2003. His family and the Pueblo Bandits
men's fast -pitch softball team are paying for the purchase and installation of a
new scoreboard for the facility and have requested that the field be named in his
honor. The Santos family and members of the Pueblo Bandits have also
volunteered to help maintain this field in order that this highly visible recreation
facility can continue to be a source of pride for the Bessemer neighborhood and
the City of Pueblo.
