INTRODUCED: Marrh 22, 20M BY: Michael Occhiato ,COUNCIL P N 1 _ APPROVED: PREQ OF CITY COUNCIL r TY CLERK 7q&l D Background Paper for Proposed RESOLUTION AGENDA ITEM # /g DATE: March 22, 2004 DEPARTMENT: CITY MANAGER'S OFFICE LEE R. EVETT, CITY MANAGER DAVE GALLI, DEPUTY CITY MANAGER TITLE A RESOLUTION APPROVING THE PAYMENT OF $12,000 OF CDBG FUNDS TO ASSIST IN THE PRESERVATION, RENOVATION, AND RESTORATION OF A CONTRIBUTING BUILDING IN THE UNION AVENUE HISTORIC DISTRICT LOCATED AT 230 SOUTH UNION AVENUE ISSUE With the demolition of the Cottonwood building formerly located at 232 South Union Avenue, there was significant damage to the adjoining wall of the building located at 230 South Union Avenue. In addition, with the demolition of the Cottonwood building, historic signage on the side wall of the building at 230 South Union Avenue has been uncovered. Following an inspection of the wall by the Regional Building Department, it was determined that without the repairs, there may be an eventual deterioration and collapse due to structural failure. There is now a single owner of both 230 and 232 South Union Avenue. It is the owner's desire to renovate and repair the wall on the building at 230 South Union Avenue as well as restore the historic signage. The owner will have the brick restored on the wall as well as the historic sign repainted at an estimated cost of $50,000. This resolution will approve the use of $12,000 of CDBG money to be used toward the brick restoration work, which will reinforce the structural soundness of the wall on this building in the historic district. The remaining $38,000 for the additional brick restoration work as well as the painting of the historic sign will be provided by the owner of the building. RECOMMENDATION This resolution is placed on the agenda at the request of Council Member Chostner. FINANCIAL IMPACT CDBG funds in the amount of $12,000 will be paid from the "Abate Dangerous Buildings" project number CD0233.
