HomeMy WebLinkAbout09974RESOLUTION NO. 9974 A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE CITY COUNCIL'S ENDORSEMENT AND SUPPORT OF BALLOT QUESTION 2A (PUBLIC SAFETY FACILITIES/HALF-CENT SALES TAX EXTENSION) AND ENCOURAGING VOTERS WITHIN THE CITY OF PUEBLO TO VOTE YES ON BALLOT QUESTION 2A WHEREAS, the City of Pueblo is desperately in need of a new police building, municipal court, fire station in the Bessemer area, fire station in the southwest quadrant of Pueblo, and satellite police facilities located throughout the community, and WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to finance these public safety facilities without increasing the tax rate to the citizens of Pueblo, and WHEREAS, as of December 31, 2003, there will be approximately $22 million of surplus funds available in the half-cent Sales tax for economic development fund, and WHEREAS, the approval of ballot question 2A will add an additional $48 million over the next eight years to the half-cent sales tax for economic development fund, and WHEREAS, the approval of ballot question 2A will authorize the redirection of $17 million from the half-cent sales tax fund for economic development to be used to construct the much needed public safety facilities, and WHEREAS, the approval of ballot question 2A Will enhance the opportunities to continue to pursue .economic development ventures by providing $53 million of revenue for economic development over the next eight years, and WHEREAS, the approval of ballot question ZA will eliminate the need to finance the construction of these public safety facilities, thus saving the taxpayers of the City approximately $10 million in interest and finance charges, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PUEBLO THAT: SECTION 1. The City Council does hereby express their strong support and endorsement of ballot question 2A. SECTION 2. The City Council encourages all registered voters to vote on November 4, 2003, and to vote YES on ballot question 2A.
