HomeMy WebLinkAbout09390RESOLUTION NO. 9390 A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE RETURN OF ALL UNITED STEELWORKERS OF AMERICA TO THEIR JOBS AT ROCKY MOUNTAIN STEEL MILLS' PUEBLO, COLORADO FACILITY WHEREAS, on October 3, 1997, 1,000 members of the United Steelworkers of America began an unfair labor practice strike at the CF &I / Rocky Mountain Steel Mill; and WHEREAS, in December of 1997, the strikers made an unconditional offer to return to work and end their strike; and WHEREAS, the company refused the Steelworkers' offer to return to work, maintaining the jobs had been filled by replacement workers; and WHEREAS, IN May, 2000, a National Labor Relations Board administrative law judge ruled that Rocky Mountain Steel was guilty of massive labor law violations and ordered the company to reinstate the steelworkers to their jobs and pay them back -pay for refusing the 1997 offer of unconditional return to work; and WHEREAS, to date, hundreds of workers still have not been reinstated to their jobs; and WHEREAS, until Rocky Mountain Steel Mills replaced the experienced union steelworkers, there had been no steelworker fatalities over a period of many years, but since the inexperienced replacement workers were hired in 1997, there have been two deaths and numerous injuries; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PUEBLO, that: SECTION 1. The members of the Pueblo City Council fully support the efforts of the United Steelworkers of America at the Rocky Mountain Steel Mills facility in their efforts to secure a contract that provides the workers with security in their jobs, relief from outrageous levels of forced overtime, good health care, a decent retirement and for the return of all of the CF &I / Rocky Mountain Steel Mills steelworkers to their jobs.
