INTRODUCED: August 13, 2001 PERSON APPROVED: ' WT OF CITY COUNCIL ATTESTED BY. '` 4-,' TY CLERK Background Paper for Proposed RESOLUTION AGENDA ITEM # S DATE: AUGUST 13, 2001 DEPARTMENT: POLICE DEPARTMENT TITLE A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF PUEBLO POLICE DEPARTMENT TO APPLY FOR A 2002 COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION LEAF GRANT FOR DUI ENFORCEMENT. ISSUE Should the Pueblo Police Department be allowed to submit a CDOT LEAF Grant in the amount of $70,720? RECOMMENDATION The Police Department recommends approval to continue DUI enforcement efforts. BACKGROUND This grant application, if approved, will allow the Police Department to increase its efforts in DUI enforcement throughout the 2002 grant year. Community awareness efforts will continue through continued collaboration with the Pueblo DriveSmart coalition. Additionally, the Minnequa Merchants Association voiced concerns over alcohol related problems in the Bessemer area. We anticipate that a continued enforcement presence will be needed to have a long lasting impact on these problems, and LEAF funding will allow the dedication of full time officers to DUI enforcement in the Bessemer area. FINANCIAL IMPACT There is no financial impact to the Police Department or the City of Pueblo. This grant will cover the cost of the officers involved in DUI enforcement and does not require a matching amount from the department.
