ATTEST: City erk of Council ..... . ... . ' x Background Paper for Proposed RESOLUTION AGENDA ITEM # DATE: March 26, 2001 DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS TITLE A RESOLUTION AWARDING A CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT IN THE AMOUNT OF $48,620.45 AND SETTING FORTH $26,000 FOR CONTINGENCIES FOR 2001 CROSSPAN REPLACEMENT ISSUE Should the City Council award a construction contract for 2001 Crosspan Replacement to Vertex Concrete, for $48,620.45. RECOMMENDATION Approval of this Resolution. BACKGROUND This project will replace settled, broken or deteriorated concrete crosspans at various locations in the city. The locations are chosen from a list of complaints that have been prioritized according to their severity. The low bid submitted by Vertex Concrete was significantly below the next highest bid (see attached "Bid Summary "). The owner of the company, Mr. Richard Carlyle, was approached by the construction engineer after the bids were opened to review the bid and to request confirmation that his company could perform the work at the bid unit prices. He was also given the opportunity to withdraw his bid with the consequence of forfeiting his bid bond. Mr. Carlyle chose to honor his bid proposal and was confident that his company could do the work at the unit prices quoted in his bid. The amount originally budgeted for this project was $75,000. The overage ($26,000) will be used for contingencies and to extend the contract to include additional locations. FINANCIAL IMPACT Funds for this project will be provided from the Capital Improvement Fund.
