City Manager FROM: Greg Miller, Fire Chief Glenn Schoenrock, Asst. City Manager for Fleet Maintenance RE: Purchase of Used Fire Truck Date: August 17, 2000 Attached is a copy of a proposal from Western Fire Truck Incorporated for the purchase of a 1988 Emergency One, 110 foot aerial. It is our recommendation that the funds be allocated to purchase this piece of apparatus. This particular aerial truck provides a 110 foot reach, our present aerial provides an 85 foot reach (a 25 foot increase). Our current ladder truck is 18 years old and requires extensive welding each year to repair cracks. Our estimated life expectancy for our current aerial is two to three years as a front line piece of equipment. Mr. Schoenrock and I both agree that because of the excellent condition of the 110 foot aerial, it will provide our fire department ten to fifteen years of service. A new aerial truck will cost approximately $700,000 and will provide approximately 24 years of service, costing over $29,000 per year. The aerial truck we would like to purchase cost $150,000 and we estimate twelve additional years of-service for approximately $12,500 per year. The purchase of this aerial truck will assist our fire department in meeting Insurance Service Organization (ISO) requirements. We find this to be an excellent opportunity to provide aerial service for ten to fifteen years at a great savings to our city. Several fire department and fleet maintenance personnel have inspected this piece of equipment and find it to be in very good condition. Therefore, we recommend that the City of Pueblo provide immediate notice to Western Fire Truck Incorporated of our intention to purchase this truck. Thank you for your time and consideration to this matter. If you have any question, please feel free to call. Thank You.
