BACKGROUND
On April 30 and May 1, 1999, flood waters along Fountain Creek caused severe bank erosion in
several locations within the City, resulting in damage to bicycle trails, a major sanitary sewer line,
and placing some segments of City streets in jeopardy.
Commitments of financial assistance have been made by the Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA), the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and the State of Colorado,
however, additional City funds will be necessary to repair the damage.
In addition, the Army Corps of Engineers will undertake the repair of damages to the flood control
project that they constructed in the late 1980's at their sole expense, except for trails.
A list of damaged sites, along with funding commitments by the Federal agencies is attached.
Some of the work is in progress and the rest will be contracted out as engineering is completed.
The City Street Division will undertake selective debris removal from the river channel with its own
forces during the winter months.
