TITLE: A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF
PUEBLO TO SPONSOR THE PUEBLO
ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY'S GRANT
APPLICATION TO THE STATE BOARD OF
OUTDOORS COLORADO TRUST FUND, AND
AUTHORIZING THE PRESIDENT OF THE
COUNCIL TO EXECUTE SAME
AGENDA ITEM #
DEPARTMENT: PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT
DATE: September 28.1998
ISSUE: Should City Council sponsor and submit the Pueblo Zoological Society's grant
application to the State Board of the Great Outdoors Colorado Trust Fund?
BACKGROUND: The Pueblo Zoological Society has asked the City to sponsor the re-
submittal of their grant application for the Enhancement of Existing and Development of
New Exhibits Focusing on Local Ind genous Wildlife at the Pueblo Zoo project. The City
sponsored this same grant application last year (Resolution No. 8199), but did not receive
funding from GOCO. GOCO has encouraged the Zoo to resubmit the grant application
this year. The proposed project will enhance environmental education in Pueblo County by
creating an exhibit of bison, elk, and wild turkeys with the installation of interactive graphic
displays at the Pueblo Zoo. The exhibit will also include a wildlife interpretive area which
will be housed in a teepee. In addition, there will be three other interpretative displays
located in other parts of the Zoo focusing on the local amphibians, reptiles, insects, and
plant identification.
The grant request is for $70,900 with a $17,800 cash match and a $21,500 in -kind match,
totaling a $110,200 project.
RECOMMENDATION: Approval of the Resolution.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The administration duties of the grant application and contract
will be provided by the City of Pueblo's Department of Planning and Development staff.
The Pueblo Zoological Society is not requesting the City to contribute cash funds for
matching this project.

On August 11, 1997, Council passed Resolution No. 8199 pretaining to sponsorship
of a grant proposal from the Zoological Society to the State Board of Outdoors
Colorado Trust Fund. Entitled "Enhancement of Existing and Development of New
Exhibits Focusing on Local, Indigenous Wildlife at the Pueblo Zoo," this grant
proposal sought funding for graphic displays on insects, plants, and reptiles of
Pueblo County as well as renovations to the existing Bison /Elk exhibit at the Zoo.
Unfortunately, the grant was not funded.
The Society wishes to resubmit this application in the upcoming Local Government
and Outdoor Recreation grant program. These projects are among the pilot projects
recommended by the Pueblo Natural Resources and Environmental Education
Master Plan. We are working with the City Planning Department on developing
the proposal, and they will be contacting you regarding a Council resolution.
Thank you for your continued support of our efforts to make the Zoo a source of
pride for its owners - the citizens of Pueblo.
Sincerely,
Jonnene McFarland
